THE HISTORY of TROWBRIDGE TOWN WILTSHIRE
Trowbridge Wiltshire was mentioned in the Domesday book. A small village at that time the population was around 100 villagers. It wasn't until the early 12th century that Trowbridge began to grow into a relatively small town. It was a market town in the 1200's forcing the village to grow into a smallish town. An annual fair brought many people from wide and afar into Trowbridge Town and in the early 12th century Trowbridge benefited from a castle. This castle was overwhelmed during a civil war.
Although Trowbridge was originally a farming village, from the 14th century a new wool industry had begun. Still Trowbridge was a slow growing town, around the 1500's the population was less than 2000 and it wasn't until the 18th century that Trowbridge began to grow, mainly due to the wool industry. The streets were paved and street lights installed.
The first census in 1801 recorded a population of 5,800 villagers and was considered a good sized town and by the early 1800's the population was nearer 11000.
Trowbridge didn't grow considerably for many years and the wool and cloth industries began to decline by the early 19th century, just as Trowbridge began to benefit from a new railway, gas supply, piped water, the first hospital and a park.
By the 20th century the old industries of Trowbridge had completely declined and are non existent today. They are however replaced by modern industries such as bedding, light engineering, food factories and a mobile phone call centre, which even today is still growing fast bringing more business and workers into Trowbridge Town Wiltshire with its estimated population of around 25,000.
Although the castle no longer exists, Castle Place shopping centre in Trowbridge town opened in the early 1970's followed by The Shires shopping centre early 1990's.
Trowbridge also has an everyday indoor marketplace and plenty of parking around the town centre.
